How do RiverClan hunt in the winter?

Alright, so I was roleplaying on the site I roleplay Frogpath on, and its leaf-bare. I'm roleplaying a RiverClan apprentice, and Fallensnow is teaching her to hunt. And I thought, how do they hunt in ice? We decided on they cut out circles with their claws, but if you have any other ideas, I would really love to hear them!
