Smudge begins his appearances in having odd dreams of cats fleeing the forest. He remembers his best friend, Firestar, had strange visions when he left to join the forest cats. He goes to find Firestar but is caught by a ThunderClan patrol. Luckily, Firestar is there to break up the brewing fight. He learns his Twoleg Nest is on SkyClan's old territory While him and Firestar were talking, he introduces him to the new kittypet, Hattie.
In the first Arc Smudge is a good friend to Rusty, seen chatting on the fence with him. He talks to him and questions if he'll really go out into the woods, when Rusty answers yet Smudge is shocked. The next day, When Rusty decides to join ThunderClan, Smudge is very distraught and upset, begging him not to leave. Smudge spends most of his morning that day with Rusty, later parting with him.
Smudge sees Rusty, now Firepaw, later in the book. He doesn't notice that it is his best friend at first, but when he does they begin to talk about what Firepaw at witnessed. Tigerclaw sees this and reports back to Bluestar.
When Firestar goes to the Twolegplace for a visit, he sees Smudge talking with an unfamilliar she-cat. He learns that she lives in his old nest and goes by the name of Hattie.
He is not seen, but is mentioned by Cody when telling Leafpaw about Firestar's old kittypet life and being Rusty's best friend. Smudge is not seen or mentioned again.
Rock explains to the kits about Smudge being Firestar's best friend. He describes Smudge as being a plump lazy kittypet, not understanding Firestar's long to be in the forest. But, he was kind enough to understand and dream Firestar's SkyClan dreams, Saying some kittypets aren't all fat and lazy.
